Biden Admin Could Eye Mimbres Peaks As Next National Monument

The Biden administration could potentially be eyeing its sixth national monument, if petitioners in New Mexico get their way.

A campaign to establish the Mimbres Peaks National Monument launched last month. Petitioners claim this proposal would “conserve” 245,000 federal land acres from multiple-use activities like grazing and mining. The area would encompass the Florida Mountains, Cooke’s Range, the Good Sight Mountains, and the “Tres Hermanas” peaks.

esterday, House Committee on Natural Resources Chairman Bruce Westerman (R-Ark.) and Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations Chairman Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) led a letter to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Gary Gensler and Director Haoxiang Zhu, seeking information on a proposed rule change to permit the listing of Natural Asset Companies (NACs) on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

Biden Administration Announces Landsat 2030 Initiative Dovetails with Natural Asset Companies

On December 20th, the Biden administration announced an international partnership initiative called Landsat 2030, chaired by Vice-President Harris.

Landsat is a partnership between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Interestingly, these are two of the federal agencies that are also listed as part of “The Working Group” for Biden’s “National Strategy to Develop Statistics for Environmental Economic Decisions” created in January of 2023.

Importantly, with their latest notice, they are instituting proceedings requiring the applicants (New York Stock Exchange and Intrinsic Exchange Group) to show that NACs do not violate Securities law. Defense of Property Rights Act Filed

The bill:

Provides the opportunity for compensation when government action significantly impairs the value of the property.
Sets significant impairment of property rights at $20,000 or 20% of property value, whichever is less.
Gives the landowner standing to challenge and bring a civil action in the United States District Court or the United States Court of Federal Claims.

The County argues that listing their federal lands into a NAC would require the land to be managed for “sustainable” purposes and eliminate the productive uses.  These productive uses support their local economy by funding their schools, hospitals, emergency services, roads, utilities, and other necessary services.
