Chairman Lee Adds Provision to Reduce Federal Land Inventory

by | Jun 17, 2025 | Liberty Matters | 0 comments

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) added an amendment to the “One Big Beautiful Bill” that would sell off between 2.2 and 3.3 million acres of the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service managed land for affordable housing. Lands in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington state and Wyoming would be eligible.

President Trump and Vice President Vance have both suggested reducing the amount of federal lands owned by the federal government in previous campaign events. American Stewards has encouraged members of Congress for several years to reduce federal land inventory by identifying federal lands better suited for the private sector.

However, those who fear selling federal lands would diminish recreation opportunities have been campaigning against this move to increase private property ownership in America. Rep. Zinke from Montana has taken credit for killing this provision on the House side.
