Earlier this month, the United Nations (UN) was set to vote on the first global carbon tax that would have increased the cost of energy, food, and fuel costs worldwide.
President Trump and members of Congress objected to the tax and both pressured UN members to postpone the vote for at least a year, which they did.
The tax proposal was approved in April of this year by 176 UN countries during a meeting of its shipping agency known as the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The IMO is responsible for “the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships.”
This is the same nonsense the Biden administration supported that led to so many programs and restrictions claiming Americans and American businesses were poisoning the world with carbon dioxide and causing global climate change. They supported the UN and all their climate ideology and certainly would have supported a global fee on ships that breach their carbon emissions standards. But fortunately, they’re gone.
The current administration described this move as “Unelected global bureaucrats at the UN are trying to build another slush fund, and they expect Americans to pay for it.”
Multiple members of Congress immediately responded by filing legislation to prohibit the U.S. government from funding any global carbon tax, as well as block voluntary contributions to the U.N. by the U.S. if such a tax is levied.
Rep. August Pfluger (TX-11), Troy Balderson (OH-12), and Randy Weber (TX-14) are leading the legislation claiming the IMO tax “would have increased global shipping costs by 10% or more, advantaged Chinese shipyards, and hit American consumers directly.”
President Trump made it clear unelected international bureaucrats will not impose taxes on American citizens. This would be one of the clearest violations of our U.S. Constitution – “taxation without representation”.
Sentiment is growing by American citizens as well as members of Congress to leave the UN. The Republican Study Committee, Congress’ largest conservative caucus stated:
“The United States cannot afford another UN agreement that harms the interests of our country. The net-zero framework, a de facto global carbon tax, would have been a flagrant overstep in its attempt to impose taxes on American citizens and companies. If finalized, the proposal would have devastated American energy workers, spiked consumer costs, and handed China a competitive advantage in global shipping – all while undermining our domestic supply chains and financial security.”
In their quest for a one-world government, this is just one of the horrible ideas the United Nations would love to impose on every nation knowing it would be America shouldering the economic burden.
To protect our nation from a world-wide carbon tax and hundreds of other destructive policies opposing our sovereignty, it’s time for America to exit the United Nations.
