Last week, American Stewards and 19 other national organizations, joined in a letter of support with Pacific Legal Foundation, supporting Chairman Bruce Westerman’s H.R. 1897 ESA Amendments Act of 2025. The coalition of organizations are all committed to property rights, free markets, and responsible environmental stewardship.
H.R. 1897, is the bill that Chairman Westerman accepted two key amendments recommended by American Stewards.
The first was offered by Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) requiring congressional approval of critical habitat designations over 50,000 acres. The second was offered by Rep.Pete Stauber (R-MN) requiring the species determination analysis to be prepared in coordination with the States, local governments, and Tribes.
Another key amendment supported by the coalition limits attorney’s fees associated with ESA litigation. For too long environmental groups have collected fees to support their organization using the Endangered Species Act. H.R. 1897 limits the total fees a single organization can receive in a single year.
The letter is addressed to both the Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and Steve Scalise, the Majority Leader.
